Trust is on the decline, and we need to rebuild it. That’s a commonly heard suggestion for making a better world … but, says philosopher Onora O’Neill, we don’t really understand what we’re suggesting. She flips the question, showing us that our three most common ideas about trust are actually misdirected. (Filmed at TEDxHousesofParliament.)

  1. old people are untrustworty because they have given all the land, all the resources and everything of value away to THE MOST UNTRUSTWORTHY GROUPS aka the bankers and politicians. WITHOUT TAKING ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR IT. This woman is a coward and the only way forward is to revert back to how it was before the colonization of the earth. Free land ownership without the treat of death. Do the research the whole concept of land ownership is based on slavery and that is why people put up with it against their free will.

End the death treat on free land ownership and young people will start to make communes why the old can rot in the city's that they build themselves as prisons. Life free without vegard (the cowardly devil).

  2. My philosophy when it comes to trust is I try to trust everyone I meet within reasonable limits until they prove to be untrustworthy. If as I hope, they prove to be trustworthy I increase the depth of my original trust. If someone proves untrustworthy, I withdraw my trust. It's a good way to live as it makes dealing with people much easier than it would be if I started out not trusting.

  3. We live in a world where men on the street are thought of as possible rapists or pedos until they prove themselves otherwise. We have governments that no longer protect the privacy of the individual and are the main party/es involved in spying on their citizens. A new generation of socially awkward people who communicate through "machines" and are generally uncomfortable around people. Yeah, I think trust has been on the decline for a while.

  4. Competency does not necessarily mean you have done "the thing" before, it means you are very likely capable of doing the thing. The same is true for entry-level jobs. People display a number of related indicators (skills, other prior work experience, behavioral tendencies) that lead their potential employer to believe that they will be able to accomplish the necessary tasks, and thus are judged competent for the job.

  5. Obviously there are numerous aspects to a good mother but I think some are pretty obvious and most good mothers own those qualities. For instance, caring about others, liking children, having some discipline, taking responsibility etc..
So take qualities you think are essential to be a good mom and you will be able to see if your GF would be a good fit.
And at least for me a single mom wouldn't be more trustworthy tbh.

  6. Question: If one must have honesty, reliability and competency to be trustworthy, then how can I trust my girlfriend to one day become a good mother to my child? She never had a child so I can't say she has the 'competency' to be a good mom. Must i marry a single mom if i want someone trustworthy enough to be a mom? Can trust never be placed on one with potential?

  7. Notice that she is a "Philosopher". That's what philosophers have been doing for thousands of years, stating what they believe to be startling truths just because the world suggests that what they have discovered is not yet known. Usually it is, just not reflected upon by the majority. Philosophers are the bridge between the unaware and the discovers, imo.

  8. Lets redefine the word trust. It is a god given abillity, to witch we have no abillity to decline from do. Although like meany things that our creator allows us, determining wheather to trust possitively or negatively is up to us. Therefore allowing us to have a free will helps us to be better people.

  9. So the only way that politicians can be trustworthy is by making themselves vulnerable to the public. This is the purpose that open elections and the right to bear arms were SUPPOSED to have, but sadly, the elections have been bought by the corporate interests, and the guns people have are almost obsolete compared with the weapon capabilities of governments.

  10. Thank you,for those of us in sales, this is excellent commentary as we are generally suspected of being sheisters.1- Aim to identify those who are honest, reliable in their area of competence and then decide if trustworthy/ 2- identify your own competence carefully. 3-Make yourself vulnerable so that your motivations are easy to judge and a client can decide if to do business with you. Judge people intelligently.

  12. Of 'her' theory'. In all the incredible Ted Talks speakers I've heard over the years, this one left me wondering why, other than for the sake of being an authority because she says she is, and this being about her, rather than "us". maybe that's why I keep falling asleep as I try to reply, I just find it so transparent, so, lacking in direction or focus that to be fair, I'll sleep, and see if tomorrow I can find something positive I can derive from it… Wow?

  13. behavior that I stills the 'trustworthiness our 'philosopher' seems to be attempting to address. Yet based on her language, and consistent equivocating, always leaving just enough 'wiggle room, to take whatever venue position she seems to embrace as her main focus point,", a need to be contrarian rather than helpful. At least that's my take. Trust is the experience of faith, that contrary to the 'polls' , our misunderstanding of why we trust less is the consequence, not of our experiences but ou

I did suspect that you meant something along those lines (and I agree) but I wasn't quite sure as I found the phrasing a little confusing (I'm not a native english speaker). It is true, YT comment sections are a warzone and I can definitely understand the defense mechanism issue.
Thanks again and enjoy your breakfast!

  17. What an unnecessarily hostile answer.
No, i don't understand what you're saying and I'd like to have it explained to me. What I do understand is that you don't think very highly of this video and it would interest me to know why. Whether I like or dislike this video has no significance in this matter.
I don't know what got into your pants but there's no need to feel so assaulted and defensive whenever someone asks you a simple question.
